FLORIDA KEYS — A large mosaic mural featuring art by nearly 300 Florida Keys artists is to debut Feb. 12 and tour the island chain to celebrate the connection between the community and cultural initiatives.

The Connections Project mural, titled “A Mosaic of the Keys” and spearheaded by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, is made up of individual canvases measuring 6-by-6-inches square. Blank canvases were provided to local artists and creative residents to design and embellish, with the completed pieces arranged into the colorful large-scale mural.

“At a time when making connections is more meaningful than ever, our Florida Keys artists have collaborated to create a mural that connects them to each other and to visiting and resident art lovers,” said Elizabeth Young, the arts council’s executive director.

The individual canvases feature art in mediums including painting, photography, mixed media, beading and quilting. Subjects range from subtropical vistas and the Keys’ laid-back lifestyle to abstract images and underwater scenes.

The mural is to be unveiled Feb. 12 at Our Place in Paradise art gallery in Tavernier, and remain there until Feb. 28 before embarking on the Keyswide tour.

Planned exhibition dates and venues are March 2-14 at Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty in Islamorada, March 16-28 at Marathon’s Shady Palm Art Gallery, March 30 through April 11 at Big Pine Key’s Artists in Paradise Gallery, April 13-25 at Key West’s Royal Furniture and April 27 through May 10 at Key West’s Gato Building, headquarters of the arts council.

While most years’ mural tours feature opening receptions at each venue, Young said they will not be held this year based on coronavirus considerations. Instead, art lovers are invited to view the mural on their own.

They also can make a permanent connection by adding pieces of it to their own collections. Patrons may make a $50 donation for one individual canvas or a $125 donation for three at keysarts.com. After the road show tour, each purchaser will receive a randomly selected piece or pieces of the mosaic by mail.

Proceeds from the Connections Project benefit Keys artists and cultural organizations through arts council grants and programs.
