Community Theater Performances Enliven Florida Keys Stages

Since 1978 The Key Players group has provided live community theater to the Upper Keys. The next production, "9 to 5, The Musical," is to run Feb. 20-29. The musical comedy is based on the popular movie that follows three women who change the sexist 1979 office workplace. Scheduled to debut this spring is an adult comedy, "Boeing, Boeing."

Started as a small community group in 1944, the Marathon Community Theatre at 5101 Overseas Highway has grown to perform many shows with a talented group of local residents.
February productions include a reading of "Queen of Bingo," a rollicking comedy running Feb. 21-22. Set for March 5 through April 4 is the clever life lampoon, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and May 7-23, "The Siegel," a comedy about modern love by Michael Mitnik. Originally built as a carriage house in the 1800s, the building that is home to Key West's Red Barn Theatre at 319 Duval St., rear, has hosted modern-era performances since 1981.
This season's standouts include "Short Attention Span Theatre 2020: The Twilight Zone," exploring a fifth dimension between light and shadow, running Feb. 18 through March 14; and "Frankie + Johnny in the Clair de Lune," a timeless love story set for March 24 through April 18. In its 80th season, the Waterfront Playhouse, at 310 Wall St., adjacent to Key West's renowned Mallory Square, presents a glimpse into one of Billie Holiday's last performances in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" (Feb. 12-15).

Exploring the art of "immersion" theater, Fringe Theater Key West sets itself apart by performing in settings "anywhere there is an electrical outlet."
In mid-February Fringe Theater presents Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison's "Desdemona," a reimagined intimate dialogue of words and music from the doomed heroine in Shakespeare's "Othello." The play is scheduled to run Feb. 19-23 at the Sidebar, 504 Angela St.
The spring roster includes "Bloomsday," a time-travel love story (March 17-28), performed at Bayview Park at the corner of Virginia and Pearl streets. At the tower at Fort East Martello, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd., three actors present a fast-paced and laugh-out-loud funny "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged" (April 21-25).
The 2020 season closes with "Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche," a hilarious potpourri of 1950s feminine chitchat, running June 2-6 and 24-27 at the Key West Armory, 600 White St. Visit fringetheater.org or call 305-731-0581.
