KEY WEST, Fla. - The Key West boxing tradition that dates back to Ernest Hemingway is to be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 18, when aficionados can watch 11 fights in an open-air waterfront setting at the island's East Quay Wall at 301 E. Quay Road.
"Battle at the East Quay Wall" is to feature talented local and visiting fighters vying for mastery in multiple disciplines including mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing and combat jiujitsu.
The evening's anticipated highlights include a three-round boxing match between Scott Diaz and Jude Brogli, a five-round kickboxing challenge pitting Gabriel Alvarez against Chase Brooks and a three-round MMA competition between Oscar Lacayo and Chris Gonzalez.
"We have a good mix of styles and we're working hard to keep the fighting tradition of Key West alive," said Mile Zero Fights Chief Executive Officer Eddy Aguiar.
In 1930s Key West, when he wasn't writing, fishing or relaxing with compadres, Ernest Hemingway often officiated boxing matches in the Bahama Village neighborhood near his Whitehead Street home. He also enjoyed sparring with local fighters.
Mile Zero Fights recalls that heritage of sportsmanship while offering spectators the chance to view challenging competitions outdoors in subtropical Key West.
In addition to the main events, audiences can expect a jiujitsu demonstration by two 7-year-old youngsters dressed as their favorite superheroes.
The gate at the East Quay Wall venue is to open at 7 p.m. Food and beer are to be available for purchase at the site.
Ticket prices start at $35 per person for general admission, with ringside seats and VIP tables also available. A percentage of proceeds is to benefit the Key West Police Athletic League and the Key West High School wrestling team.
