KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Joe Skrumbellos of Sunrise, Florida, caught and released three permit to earn 450 points and the title of grand champion angler at the 2016 Del Brown Permit Tournament that ended July 12.
Skrumbellos and his captain, Matt Fitzgerald of Sunrise, were defending champions in the fly-only challenge, and handily repeated their 2015 victory.
Nathaniel Linville of Key West released one permit on the tournament’s first fishing day and one on the final day, and was named first runner-up with 300 points. Linville fished with Captain John O’Hearn of Big Pine Key, Florida.
Kat Vallilee Linville of Key West followed her husband in the standings. She also caught and released two permit to earn 300 points, but Nathaniel Linville prevailed because tournament rules state that points ties will be broken by the total inches of permit caught.
Vallilee Linville fished with Captain Drew Delashmit of Cudjoe Key, Florida.
The tournament’s largest permit, measuring 29.75 inches, was caught by Mike Ward of Spokane, Washington. He fished with Key West’s Captain Don Gable.
Jeff Massey of Flora Vista, New Mexico, took top honors for bonefish releases with 10, repeating his 2015 victory in the tournament’s bonefish category. He was guided by Captain Justin Rea of Sugarloaf Key, Florida.
Anglers on 20 boats released a total of 13 permit and 32 bonefish in the tournament named for the late Del Brown, who is credited with popularizing permit fishing with a fly rod. The internationally acclaimed Brown caught more than 500 permit on fly before his death in 2003.
