FLORIDA KEYS — Anglers who participate in the popular Redbone Trilogy of Florida Keys fishing tournaments can enjoy tough competition, warm camaraderie and the chance to help “catch the cure for cystic fibrosis.”
Presented by Robert-James Sales, the Redbone Trilogy challenges are held in September, October andNovember each year. They raise funds to defeat the life-threatening chronic lung disease that is the United States’ leading genetic killer of children and young adults.
The first of the 2018 trilogy is the Robert-James Sales S.L.A.M. (Southernmost Light Tackle Anglers Masters), scheduled Friday through Sunday, Sept. 7-9, in Key West waters. The S.L.A.M. targets the three premier backcountry game fish species — bonefish, tarpon and permit. The goal is to score as many “slams” as possible by catching all three on the same day.
The series continues Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7, with the Robert-James Sales Baybone Tournament in Islamorada. In this bonefish and permit competition, awards are based on the most points accumulated representing both species.
The trilogy concludes with the Robert-James Sales Redbone Tournament, planned this year for Friday through Sunday, Nov. 2-4, in Islamorada waters. Anglers score points by catching redfish and bonefish, and whoever accumulates the most points wins.
Awards await both individual anglers and teams in each tournament. The angler who accumulates the most points while fishing all three challenges is to earn the title of series grand champion.
A number of celebrities show their support by taking part in the tournaments each year. Celebrity competitors typically include Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, former Denver Broncos football player Mark Cooper and former NASA space shuttle astronaut Bruce Melnick.
The entry fee for each tournament is $3,700 for a two-angler team. It includes admission to social functions for each angler, the guide and one guest per person.
