Night divers are to take to Florida Keys reefs for a chance to witness a delicate reproductive phenomenon that occurs when coral polyps release millions of gametes (eggs and sperm) in synchronized mass-spawning rituals. The event is likely to occur around the August and September full moons.

As part of its 2017 Lionfish Derby Series across Florida, Reef Environmental Education Foundation is to sponsor a one-day derby Saturday, July 29, at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, located at mile marker 102.5 in Key Largo.

Independence Day celebrations throughout the 125-mile-long Florida Keys island chain salute the nation’s freedom — and the quirky independent spirit of the Keys — with local parades, picnics and parties topped off by fireworks displays.
