For 18 years the Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge has successfully combined family, fundraising and fishing. The 2017 tournament is set for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 22-24, in Key Largo. 

Night divers are to take to Florida Keys reefs for a chance to witness a delicate reproductive phenomenon that occurs when coral polyps release millions of gametes (eggs and sperm) in synchronized mass-spawning rituals. The event is likely to occur around the August and September full moons. 

Mike Dawes of Wilson, Wyoming, caught and released four permit to earn 600 points and the title of grand champion angler at the 2017 Del Brown Permit Tournament that ended July 11. The tournament honors the late angling legend Brown, who caught more than 500 permit during his lifetime.
