FLORIDA KEYS -- The documentary “The Florida Keys: 200 Years of Paradise,” exploring the history of the continental United States’ southernmost island chain, has won a 2023 Suncoast EMMY® Award.

Produced by South Florida PBS, the hourlong television program debuted on Public Broadcasting Service channels across the U.S. beginning March 1 to celebrate the Florida Keys’ bicentennial year. The Florida Legislature established Monroe County, encompassing the entire 125-mile-long string of islands, on July 3, 1823.

Program topics include the Keys’ booms and busts, industries such as shipwreck salvage, cultural and artistic expression, sport fishing, community leaders, natural disasters and renewal, environmental conservation and the legacy of Black pioneers. The Keys’ dramatic history is told through the eyes and voices of residents who live and interpret that history daily.

“The Florida Keys: 200 Years of Paradise” was recognized in the documentary cultural category, winning one of 11 2023 Suncoast EMMY® Awards for programs produced by South Florida PBS staff and partners.

“This extraordinary film celebrates the rich history of this community, highlighting the diverse characters and events that have made the Florida Keys the special place that it is today,” said Joyce Belloise, the senior vice president of content and station manager. "South Florida PBS is proud to be part of preserving the stories of the past and fostering a collective understanding of our shared heritage.”

The Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences oversees the prestigious regional EMMY® Awards in television markets in Florida, several other southern states and Puerto Rico.

“The Florida Keys: 200 Years of Paradise” was underwritten by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and Badia Spices.

The TDC’s public relations firm, NewmanPR, suggested the concept for a Keys 200 anniversary special to South Florida PBS.

Some 85 percent of PBS affiliates around the country committed to airing the Keys documentary. The show can also be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKSW_peQP3c.
